Self-Talk: The New Frontier
One of the oldest self-help techniques is the reciting of positive statements over and over again, with the belief that perhaps this will override all the negativity within oneself and create a new, more successful self. Relegated to the far back burner in psychological research--some would say the "fringe", this technique has actually not been professionally studied very much. The technique does make sense to the layperson, and even has celebrity backing, yet no real neuroscientific studies have been done to determine the exact mechanism of "positive thinking", and why or why not it works. This is now changing.
David Sarwer is a psychologist and clinical director at the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders at the University of Pennsylvania, has begun a research project using mirrors with obese and anorexic patients. The study investigates negative self-talk that his subjects use toward their bodies when looking at their own reflection. The test group is being instructed to replace perjorative terms, such as, "ugly", "fat", "gross", etc. with neutral or positive terms, such as, "cuddly", "large", or "wonderfully big". Following this, the test group then makes requests of their mirrored image, such as, "I'd like my thighs to be smaller", or, "My butt is larger than I would like". The underlying notion is that it's not enough for a patient to lose physical weight — or gain it, as some women need to — if she doesn't also change the way her body looks in her mind's eye.
Another study explores the difference between referring to oneself in the 3rd person, or by name, and using the pronoun "I". People referring to themselves in the 3rd person are found to be much more encouraging and positive with themselves than those who use the "I" reference to self. This increases confidence and allows for much less self-judgment.
Psychologist Ethan Kross of the University of Michigan led the work, studying the pronouns people use when they talk to themselves silently, inside their minds. "What we find," Kross says, "is that a subtle linguistic shift--shifting from 'I' to your own name--can have really powerful self-regulatory effects." He asked volunteers to give a speech--with only five minutes of mental preparation. As they prepped, he asked some to talk to themselves and to address themselves as "I." Others he asked to either call themselves "you," or to use their own names as they readied their speeches.
Kross says that people who used "I" had a mental monologue that sounded something like, "'Oh, my god, how am I going do this? I can't prepare a speech in five minutes without notes. It takes days for me to prepare a speech!'"
People who used their own names, on the other hand, were more likely to give themselves support and advice, saying things like, "Ethan, you can do this. You've given a ton of speeches before." These people sounded more rational, and less emotional--perhaps because they were able to get some distance from themselves

The Medicine of Laughter...
It is well-established in psychological and medical circles that laughter is good medicine. It has been shown to normalize blood pressure, improve sleep, reduce stress, create endorphins and improve overall mood. Thousands of "laugh doctors" and even yoga instructors have made it their mission in life to get people laughing again.
At a recent conference of the National Alliance on Mental Illness in the District of Columbia, professional laughter leader Debbie Ellison demonstrated some laughter techniques. With "milkshake laughter" you pretend you're drinking your own laughter milkshake; you laugh while you do the chicken dance; or you pretend you're on your cellphone and laugh. An at-home exercise Ellison teaches is the "laugh-firmation" in which you get in front of a mirror and say nice things about yourself while pointing to yourself and laughing.
"You'll feel good all day," she says, adding, "One of the benefits of laughter is that it keeps you in the present moment, which is the only time of real joy."
Ellison doesn’t get too hung up on whether the laughter is real or fake because "the body doesn't know the difference." Physically, laughter marries especially well to yoga because laughter causes the diaphragm to move up and down, and it shakes up the surrounding organs. "It's a great internal massage," and the physical activity has even helped people lose weight, she says.
And the mind, she adds, is also more flexible when you're laughing. “If you don’t like something, laughter makes it so much easier,” she says. "Use laughter as a coping skill, so instead of crying or getting angry, just laugh. Even if it’s fake, it changes your whole perspective."

Building your windhorse...
In my further explorations into Tibetan Buddhism I ran across the Tibetan term "lungta"--lung meaning "wind", and ta meaning horse. So you have "windhorse", which is also the Tibetan name for those prayer flags you see around, and everywhere if you travel to Tibet or Nepal.
The concept of windhorse comes from a fundamental condition of the world called "Basic Goodness". Basic Goodness means that whatever happens it is for the good, despite what we may judge events to be. A perfect example of this was in the wonderful movie, "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," where the hotel manager (played by Dev Patel ["Slumdog Millionaire"]) says, "It will all turn out good in the end... If it's not good, then it's not the end!"
This demonstrates the human tendency to judge events as "good" or "bad" depending on personal values, past experiences, and fixed, unconscious patterns. We tend to expect the worst while hoping for the best. As far as windhorse is concerned, this thinking is all wrong.
The idea is to build windhorse by performing a series of acts of goodness. Once you've accumulated enough of these acts of goodness, you'll experience a "wind" in your life that you can ride like a horse. Yet, this is fundamentally an exercise in non-duality--meaning that instead of "bad" and "good", there is only Good. There can ONLY be good because the in the end, after all is said and done, the universe is perfect.
It has taken me the better part of 60 years to come around to believing in and embracing this Truth. And when you take a truly objective look at all the truly great miracles that abound in every moment, you conclude that at least there is more good than bad. But go further, taking a wider view, and behold: That "bad" you thought was there actually exists within some greater goodness. So, truly, non-duality is about extending your mind beyond judgment, beyond fear, beyond pain to a world of perfection and beauty.
In fact, you build windhorse by seeing the world as perfect and beautiful--even in the mundane. From dirty dishes to dog poop to the larger world tragedies, there is a perfection of purpose, a beautifulness of intention, that is miles beyond the ego-created dramas, pain and suffering that apparently is so bad.
There's the parable of the Zen master and the boy made famous in the movie, "Charlie Wilson's War"...
There's a little boy and on his 14th birthday he gets a horse... and everybody in the village says, "How wonderful. The boy got a horse" And the Zen master says, "we'll see." Two years later, the boy falls off the horse, breaks his leg, and everyone in the village says, "How terrible." And the Zen master says, "We'll see." Then, a war breaks out and all the young men have to go off and fight... except the boy can't because his legs are all messed up. And everybody in the village says, "How wonderful." Now the Zen master says, "We'll see."
This is an exact application of non-duality to the evaluation of life events. Taking the next step, as you jump onto your windhorse, you see the boy, the villagers and the Zen master as perfectly placed, perfectly acted in order to demonstrate some beautiful truth about existence. Ride on!
